How To Regain Your Sense Of Adventure

Posted on February 24, 2022 by Reed Naliboff

What makes life adventurous? Would you say going to the grocery store is just as adventurous as a solo trip across the country? Or would you deem the day to day tasks in your routine as simply ordinary? As the days go by, even the most adventurous soul out there goes through time periods or seasons of life where they don’t feel as adventurous as they once were.

WHAT IS A SENSE OF ADVENTURE?

When you look up the word adventure, there are a few variations that will come up for a definition. The first one provided by Merriam-Webster says adventure is “an undertaking usually involving danger and unknown risks” or “an exciting or remarkable experience.” Now, the word “danger” isn’t something that we’d like to include in our definition of adventurous, but what if we looked at it differently? Maybe adventure is dangerous because it scares away our comfort zones and fears. Maybe the only dangerous thing we need in our lives is to break up with the thought that we can never step outside what feels comfortable because it’s too risky.

One of our favorite definitions for adventure provided by Merriam-Webster is this: “to proceed despite risk.” Adventure is very much saying “yes” to meeting new people, trying new things, visiting new places, taking on new hobbies, and ultimately, saying “no” to living within your comfort zone for too long. When you first tried paddle boarding, it was that sense of adventure that encouraged you to try, even if it meant falling into the water when you lost your balance. So what else will you say yes to?

HOW DO I DISCOVER OR REDISCOVER IT?

As you go through your daily routines, it’s normal to wonder how you can reinvigorate your mind, body, and soul again, but it’s even more important to remember that it’s never too late to regain your sense of adventure. Life can take some really unexpected turns—which makes it the perfect playing ground to make being adventurous a practice, more than it is a feeling.

Experts note that adventure looks different for everyone: our brains may view creating new art pieces just as exciting as SUP surfing is, and we can’t help but to agree. Adventure comes in all sizes, so whether you take a calm paddle on the water, or try to beat your own personal PR when SUP touring, trying something new on the water is a key practice that can help you maintain your sense of adventure.

Paired with trying new things, is not letting fear or comparison control you. How many times have you scrolled past your social media feeds, all to feel like you’re missing out, or to feel like maybe you’re too young or too old to something? You’d be surprised to find how much you’re capable of when you choose to step outside your comfort zone to try something new. That solo trip you’ve always wanted to go on? We think it’s finally time you take the plunge (and take your SUP with you of course). The way you’ve always wanted to see if you can surf or fish on your SUP? There’s a way to do that too. But it takes practice, and it starts by saying “yes” to the things that make you feel alive.

THE ART OF A LIFE THAT’S BETTER IN BALANCE

The art of a life that’s better in balance doesn’t come by repeating “I love my mind, body, and soul” over and over again—it comes from feeding the needs of your mind, body, and soul. We’re no doctors, but we can all agree that deep down inside our minds, bodies, and souls, there’s a yearning to explore new places, to receive relaxation that doesn’t feel rushed, and adventure that never ends. So we’re going to ask you again: what will you say yes to?
